October 21, 2019

2-week Look Ahead

During the past week:

  • Sidewalks and curb/gutter was completed on Main Street.

  • Sidewalks and landscape beds were completed in Fountain Square Park.  All concrete in the park has been completed.

  • Landscaping was completed on the interior area of Fountain Square Park – College Street end.

  •  New electrical conduit was installed and repairs made to the interior areas of Fountain Square Park.

  • Installation of the remaining pedestrian poles was installed and wired.

  • Pavers in both bump-outs on Main Street was installed and opened for pedestrian traffic.

 

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  • Begin planting in Fountain Square Park.

  • Continue installing irrigation and manufactured soil on the State Street side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Continue wiring of pedestrian signal poles.

  • Begin installation of vehicular traffic signal loops.

  • Continue to work on the catenary lighting cables.

  •  Install new entrance and landscape planter at the intersection of College Street and Spring Alley.

  • Begin beveling the saw joints in the sidewalks on Main Street and inside Fountain Square Park.

  • Install the pedestrian light poles in Fountain Square Park.

  • Begin concrete punch list items.

  • Continue the installation of the “guitar” paver system in Morris Alley.

  • Begin milling the roadway throughout the entire project.

2-week Look Ahead

During the past week:

  • Demolition was completed from The Pots Place to the corner of Main Street and State Street.  This concluded all demolition for the project.

  • Curb/gutter and sidewalks were placed from the bump-out on Main Street to State Street.

  • Curb/gutter and sidewalks were placed at the corner of Main Street and College Street.

  • Two light pole bases were installed on Main Street.  This concluded the installation of all light pole bases for the project.

  • New conduits were installed for electric and fiber from the bump-out on Main Street to State Street.

  • Three storm drainage boxes were modified/installed.

  • Troubleshooting was completed and repairs began for electric receptacles in Fountain Square Park.

  • New pavers were laid in the bump-out on the business side of Main Street.

  • Existing fiber and electric conduits were relocated at the corner of Main Street and State Street.

  • New sidewalks continued to be placed on the Main Street side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Stone base was installed for sidewalks on the State Street end of Fountain Square Park.

  • Heel-proof grates were installed in Morris Alley and it was opened for pedestrians.

 

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  • Begin preparing the College Street side of Fountain Square Park for sod and plants.

  • Begin installing irrigation and manufactured soil on the State Street side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Continue installation/wiring of pedestrian signal poles.

  • Install pedestrian signal pole foundations at the intersection of Main and State Streets.

  • Continue making repairs to the electric outlets in Fountain Square Park.

  • Continue the installation of interior sidewalks and curb/gutter in Fountain Square Park.

  • Demolition was complete from Capital Alley to Micki’s on Main.

  • Concrete sidewalk and curb was placed to Micki’s on Main.

  • The decorative concrete emblem was completed at the beginning of Capital Alley.

  • The decorative overlay was completed in Capital Alley.

  • Light pole foundation was placed on Main Street closest to College Street.

  • New conduits for electrical and fiber continued to be installed along Main Street.

  • Sidewalk continued to be placed in Fountain Square Park on the Main Street side.

  • Irrigation work continued in Fountain Square Park.

  • Pedestrian signal pole installation continued in various areas on the project.

 

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  • Make final connections to the BGMU water main replacement project.

  • Continue demolition of Sidewalks on the business side of Main Street. Work to begin at Capital Alley and continue to Micki’s on Main.o    

  • Continue Installation of catenary lighting fixtures in Morris Alley.

  • Continue installation of pedestrian poles

During the past week:

  • Park Row concrete paving was completely demolished and hauled off site.

  • New asphalt paving was installed and temporary striping was applied.

  • Interior sidewalks on the college street side of Fountain Square Park were formed and placed.

  • The pavers in the bump-out on the Park Row side of Fountain Square Park was completed.

  • Existing light pole bases were demolished and new ones installed on the State Street side of Fountain Square Park.

  • New drainage structures were installed on the State Street side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Pedestrian signal poles foundations were installed at the intersection of Park Row and State Street.

  •  New conduit was installed for the pedestrian signal poles and the pedestrian light poles on the State Street end of Fountain Square Park.

  • The catenary light poles were installed in Morris Alley.

  • Curb/gutter, sidewalks, and the bump-out were demolished and hauled off site along the Main Street side of Fountain Square Park.

  • New curb/gutter was placed along the Main Street side of Fountain Square Park. 

  • Manufactured soil was installed in the landscape planter boxes in Morris Alley.

  • Pavers continued to be installed in Morris Alley.

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  • Begin demolition of Sidewalks on the business side of Main Street. Work to begin at College Street and continue towards State Street.

  • Continue with the installation of new manufactured soil/mulch in landscape beds in Fountain Square Park near College Street.

  •  Begin the installation of the new sprinkler system in Fountain Square Park.

  • Continue installing conduit in Fountain Square Park for new pedestrian light pole bases and outlets.

  • Continue the installation of Pedestrian signal pole foundations on the East side of Fountain Square Park and making conduit tie-ins as well.

  • New sidewalks were placed along the College Street side of the Pushin Building.

  • Sidewalks and curb/gutter was removed from the bump-out on Park Row to the intersection of Main Street and State Street.

  • New curb/gutter was installed from the bump-out on Park Row to the intersection of Main Street and State Street.

  • New sidewalks were installed in Fountain Square Park on the College Street end and along Park Row to the bump-out.

  • Installation of brick pavers began in the bump-out on Park Row.

  • Pedestrian signal pole foundations were installed on the College Street end of Fountain Square Park.

  • Pedestrian light poles bases were demolished and the poles were removed on both ends of Fountain Square Park.

  • New pedestrian light pole bases were installed on the College Street end of Fountain Square Park.

  • Park Row concrete paving was removed and prepped for full depth asphalt.

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  • Begin demolition of Park Row concrete paving.

  • Complete the demolition of the curb/gutter and sidewalks on the Main Street side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Install full depth base asphalt on Park Row. 

  • Installing temporary Striping on Park Row.

During the past week:

  • Demolition of the curb/gutter and sidewalk was completed from Spring Alley to the intersection of Main Street and College Street.

  • Entrance concrete and curb/gutter was placed from Spring Alley to the intersection of Main Street and College Street.

  • Demolition of Fountain Square Park began from the intersection of College Street and Main Street to the parking bump out on Park Row.  This included the College Street end inner turn lane, turning island, curb/gutter, and sidewalk.

  • New curb/gutter was placed in the Fountain Square Park demo area.

  • Excavation of the landscape beds on State Street was completed and backfill of new soil began.

  • Installation of “guitar pavers” were installed at the State Street crosswalk and installation of pavers in Morris Alley continued.

  • Foundation for new pole base on College Street was drilled.

  • Installation and wiring of pedestrian signal heads continued.

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  • Begin demolition of the curb/gutter at the parking bump out on Park Row and the East side of Fountain Square Park/inner turning lane.

  • Continue to install new manufactured soil/mulch in landscape beds along State Street.

  • Begin excavation/layout of landscape beds on the West side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Begin installation of Irrigation and sleeves under the sidewalks on the West side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Begin installing conduit in Fountain Square Park for new pedestrian light pole bases and outlets.

  • Begin the installation of Pedestrian signal pole foundations on the West side of Fountain Square Park and making conduit tie-ins as well.

  • Continue the installation of sidewalk along the East side of College Street.

  • Sidewalks/curb & gutter/landscape beds on the West side of College was installed from Spring Alley to Main Street.

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  •  Begin demolition of full width sidewalk/curb and gutter on the East side of College Street.  Work to begin at the back of the Pushin Building and move toward Main St.

  • Begin demolition of the West side of Fountain Square Park/inner turning lane.

  • Continue to excavate/install new manufactured soil in planter beds along State Street.

  • Begin excavation/layout of planter beds on the West side of Fountain Square Park.

  • Continue the installation and wiring of the pedestrian signal poles on the entire project.

  • Installation of one light pole foundation on College Street.

  • Begin installing conduit in Fountain Square Park.

  • Begin the installation of curb & gutter/sidewalk along the East side of College Street.

2-week Look Ahead

SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION ALERT:

 BGMU Water is going to be replacing the 140 year old 8" water main that runs parallel with the buildings along Main Street. This is a BGMU project that will be in conjunction with the BG Downtown Project and will take at least 3 weeks to be completed.  Preliminary work such as fencing, layout, saw cutting, and mobilization for this water line replacement will begin Monday evening (9/2) and excavation will begin on Tuesday evening (9/3). BGMU will have all of the pipe ditches back filled each morning and parking will be available on Main street each day.

 

Also, please note that SMI will not be working on Main Street as originally scheduled, but will be working in the park and working diligently to keep and maintain the scheduled deadline for the project.  Please be aware that the inside lane of Fountain Square Park nearest College Street will be closed indefinitely for demolition on Tuesday.  The left turning lane at the intersection of Main Street and College Street will also be affected.  Drivers will need to use extreme caution while traveling in this area and please follow road signs, as this will be a highly congested area.

During the past week:

  • String steel in Morris Alley was installed, primed, and painted.

  • Concrete structures in Morris Alley were demolished and those areas were formed and concrete placed.

  • Concrete sidewalks, curb & gutter, and landscaping area were placed on State Street beginning at the intersection of Main Street to the US Bank parking Structure.

  • Demolition of sidewalks/curb & gutter was completed from Spring Alley to the entrance of Hilliard Lyons Company.

  • Setting of the new pedestrian signal poles began.

  • New conduit and rewiring of the electrical boxes was completed for CRI.

  • Electrical wiring was pulled for the new light poles on Park Row and State Street.

  • New light poles were installed on Park Row and State Street.

Over the next two weeks expect to see:

  • Begin demolition of full width sidewalk/curb and gutter on Main Street. Work to begin at Hilliard Lyons and continue toward College Street.

  • Continue the installation and wiring of the pedestrian signal poles on the entire project.

  • Begin the installation of the catenary light poles.

  • Begin installing light pole foundations along Main Street.

  • Begin the installation of curb & gutter/sidewalk along the North West side of State Street. Work will begin at Spring Alley and progress toward Main Street.

  • The AT&T junction box on the corner of Park Row and State Street was demoed and reconstructed.

  • The curb & gutter, ADA ramps, and sidewalks were placed on the corner of Park Row and State Street.

  • Light pole and pedestrian pole bases were installed along with new conduits on the corner of Park Row and State Street.

  • The new pavers were installed in the bump out on the Business side of Park Row.

  • Cleaning of the project and safety devices were installed around the entire project.

  • Curb & Gutter/Sidewalks were demoed on Park Row from College Street to BB&T.

  • BGMU Water began adjusting/capping off water meters as needed on Park Row.

  • Light Pole bases were excavated and installed on Park Row.

  • New conduits were installed on Park Row.

  • Curb & Gutter/Sidewalks were installed on the corner of College Street and Park Row.

  • Forming and placement of curb & gutter on State Street continued.

Special Construction Update

Traffic Signals at the corner of State Street and 10th Avenue will be shut down on Wednesday morning (5/29) to install a junction box and new wiring to the signal heads. This outage should last no longer than 24 hours. Also, the interior lane of Fountain Square Park near State Street will be shut down in order to complete two road bores across State Street. The lane will be opened back up Thursday afternoon if we do not experience any issues.

Starting on Tuesday, May 21st, BGMU will be temporarily cutting the power to remove the street lights on State Street and Park Row. This will also shut off the traffic signals at the intersection of State Street and Park Row. The contractors will be installing stop signs at the intersection and vehicles will need to use caution while BGMU removes the light poles.

Starting on Monday May 13th, traffic and pedestrian light signals will be shut down at the corner of College Street and Park Row in front of Spencer’s Coffee.  These will be down for at least 3 weeks.  Vehicular traffic will need to yield for pedestrians and pedestrians will need to use caution when crossing the street at this location.

Special Construction Update

PARKING SPOT CLOSURE ON THE SQUARE-MAY 13TH & MAY 16TH.

HVAC units on the roof of the Capital Arts Building will be replaced during the above dates. The intent is to block spaces for the crane, as well as spaces so that traffic can be directed around the outriggers. The contractor will be bringing FlagPro or similar to provide the barricades, cones, signage, and flagging during the lifts. On May 13th they will be making 9 separate lifts to remove the units on the roof and 8 lifts on May 16th to replace them. During the lifts, traffic flow will be stopped, but will be allowed to clear once the unit is on the truck.

 

Please refer to the photo to the right, showing the proposed parking space closures and traffic control related to the replacement of the HVAC units on the roof of the Capital Arts Building.

Special Construction Update

  • BGMU will be removing 6 light poles on College Street from Mary Jane's Chocolates to 10th Avenue on Wednesday, April 24th. This will leave the area without streetlighting until the construction in this area is complete and new light poles are installed by BGMU. Pedestrians need to use caution when walking in this area after dark.

  • Construction crews will begin working night shifts beginning on April 28th and April 29th in order to complete the demolition of sidewalks and construct safe egress into buildings before 6:00 am. This area will begin at Wealthsouth Financial Services and will stop at The Night Cap.
